The English Department educates its majors to think
critically and creatively, to enjoy literature and understand a
range of critical approaches, to have a knowledge of the history

department values literature for the picture it can provide of
contemporary society and for its ability to illuminate life.
Selections read in English classes reflect cultural diversity.
